NA1 - MANAGEMENT OF I3

High quality management will be vital to the success of the Enabling Grids for E-science in Europe (EGEE) project. While the lead partners of EGEE have considerable experience in managing large projects, an I3 is a considerably larger and more complex undertaking than previously attempted. A management structure has therefore been assembled that seeks to build on the partners established best practice and be of a sufficient scale to manage such a complex project. The structure is designed to deal with the typical project management challenges and problems associated with a diverse collection of scientific and industrial partners. The Project Management teams major focus will be to ensure that they provide the environment to deliver dependable quality production services. This will be essential for the effective exploitation of the results throughout the different scientific and industrial user communities interested in this project and its overall success.

The project will be managed using an overall management structure built on the experience gained by some of the proponents and by the proposed lead and coordinating partner in similar large European Union (EU) projects, in particular the EU DataGrid project. The internal organisation of projects of comparable sizes have similar management structures.

The objectives of the management activity include:

  • Overall project management and reporting to the EU;
  • Daily management of the project activities, resource allocation and monitoring;
  • Conflict resolutions and corrective actions;
  • To ensure timely delivery of project deliverables to the EU;
  • To implement and oversee the appropriate quality control on the project deliverables including a formal internal review process;
  • To document and disseminate project results in coordination with the project disseminationline of activity and responsible partners.
